The 65-year-old billionaire says he now regrets stressing about his age every time he hit a big numerical milestone. Just one thing: I wish I hadn't thought I was getting old at every milestone [birthday]… 30,40,50," Cuban wrote in a recent post on Threads. You may need to change your habits as you age to stay healthy, Cuban noted. Rather than getting frustrated about those changes, embrace them, Cuban wrote on Threads. When my mother was 62 years old, she dusted off a clunky Cannondale with Mary Poppins handles and joined a bicycling group. She had no background as an outdoor activity enthusiast: She did not camp or hike, had never, say, paddled a kayak. My friends are simply responding to the very real negative messaging around older women: fading looks, frail bones, cognitive decline, no cultural significance. In one instance, Dr. Levy looked at data from a longitudinal study and came to this astonishing conclusion: Mind-set was the most significant factor determining individuals’ longevity. Dr. Levy’s studies show us that we need to believe fervently in the vitality of our future.

From the crotchety neighbor to the clueless Luddite, negative stereotypes of aging are everywhere. To change your negative age beliefs, you first need to become more aware of them, Dr. Levy said. “People can strengthen their positive age beliefs at any age,” Dr. Levy said. In one 2014 study, 100 adults — with an average age of 81 — who were exposed to positive images of aging showed both improved perceptions of aging and improved physical function. But I don’t think we’re all aware of the age beliefs. To do that, researchers like him are targeting the essential biology of aging – the underlying reasons why we get old. When those biological processes fail or break down, we get sick – and aging is the biggest risk factor for that deterioration. In the meantime, though, remember this: Aging is probably not nearly as bad as you might imagine. And as my mom told me, we should all truly embrace getting older, because it sure as heck beats the alternative.

Editor’s Note: In the new season of “Chasing Life,” CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta explores how to make the most of whatever age you’re at. Tune in to hear Dr. Sanjay Gupta interview his parents, and learn how changing our mindset around aging can influence our health and longevity. Another topic that we explore in the podcast is the idea of a midlife crisis. But Sin also told me that the whole concept of “midlife crisis” has shifted since millennials, in particular, have started hitting middle age. So what does midlife, and the midlife crisis, look like for them?

And that’s a positive attitude toward aging. Dr. Levy uses an “Attitude Towards Aging” scale, which asks respondents to answer five questions: Do things keep getting worse as you get older? Gauging oneself as being capable, useful and hopeful equates to having a positive attitude. One technique is to make a list of negative thoughts and then counter each one with a positive example of something you can or hope to accomplish. You will find similar positive attitudes toward life among many aging individuals who are living better even as they live longer.
